If a non-Japanese living in Japan temporarily leaves for their home country or a third country during the permitted period of stay and wishes to re-enter Japan with the previous residency status, they need to obtain a re-entry permit before leaving Japan.
If you leave the country without obtaining a re-entry permit, your current residency status is invalidated and you will need to start over by obtaining a new visa.
There are two types of re-entry permit: "Single Validity" and "Multiple Validity."
